To obtain a drivers permit you must pass your state's learners test in most states. These exams vary in cost depending on the state. See grid below for your state's test fees. Most states charge a combined rate that includes testing and licensing.

Before taking the learners permit test, be sure to study your state's drivers manual. All of the questions will be based on information found in the manual including road sign identification, turning in intersections and parking. Next, take a practice permit test. These can be found online, usually for free. Acing the written test on your first attempt will earn you a drivers permit and send you on your way towards obtaining a drivers license.
