How many practice hours must I complete behind the wheel once I pass the driver's permit test?

Once you pass your drivers permit test and are armed with your learners permit, it’s time to hit the road to get some behind-the-wheel experience. In many states this practice time with the drivers permit is a requirement; however, just how many hours you need to log before you can get your drivers license depends on your state and, in some cases, your driver education program.

Check your state in the grid below to find out how many hours you need to log before you can apply for your full drivers license. Keep in mind that some states require a certain number of those hours to take place under specific conditions (such as nighttime or inclement weather); be sure to consult your driver handbook or a clerk at your state’s driver licensing agency.
