If I pass drivers education do I have to also take a learners permit test?

New Driver Checklist

In many states you do not have to complete drivers education before taking your learners permit test. In fact, a drivers permit is often a prerequisite for enrolling in a driver education class. To get a learners permit in New Jersey, for example, you must visit the DMV office with a licensed driving training instructor and show proof that you are enrolled in a driver education course. However, in California, you must enroll and pass an in-classroom drivers education course prior to taking the test for your learner's permit. Only after getting your drivers permit can you then enroll in behind-the-wheel training.

While completion of a drivers education class that includes both written coursework and behind the wheel practice is not needed for a learners permit, some states do require shorter classroom courses for teens in the first stages of the Graduated Drivers License program. Florida, for example, asks that teens age 15 and older complete a traffic law and substance abuse education course before applying for their learners license. The course can be taken in a traditional classroom format or through an online only option.

The purpose of a learners permit is to allow you to legally practice driving. Policies vary by state, but a permit typically allows you to drive when accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older. Depending upon your age, there may be nighttime driving restrictions or restrictions on the number of passengers allowed in the car until you earn your full drivers license.
